Obuasi Mine clash: AngloGold Ashanti Schools to reopen on Jan 27
Students of AngloGold Ashanti Schools in Obuasi are expected to return to class on January 27, 2025, amidst simmering tensions in the mining community.
The schools management had earlier served notice of re-opening on Wednesday, January 22, but a statement has announced the extension of the reopening date in anticipation of a restoration of calm.
“Management is continuing broader consultations with relevant authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone upon reopening,” the statement read.
The decision follows careful considerations of the situation in the town to ensure calm is fully restored for the safety of students, staff and other stakeholders.
Both AGA Schools and the Williams and Brew School are expected to buzz with activities on Monday.
Following the violent clash between the military and some illegal miners in the town, both private and public schools have been closed amidst security concerns.
The situation is impacting academic progress of the schools which only reopened three weeks ago.
Management of the AGA Schools says it has instituted measures to adjust the academic calendar to make up for the lost contact hours.
“To make up for the lost contact hours, particularly for our candidates preparing for the Cambridge IGCSE, Checkpoint Examinations, and the 2025 BECE, we will adjust the academic calendar,” the statement read.
