The Attorney-General has unexpectedly withdrawn charges against renowned clergyman Bishop Salifu Amoako, Mouha Amoako, and one other, leading to their discharge by the court in the East Legon accident case.

However, unconfirmed reports suggest that just as they stepped out of court, they were re-arrested under fresh legal circumstances.

Details surrounding the reason for the sudden withdrawal of charges remain unclear, as does the basis for their immediate re-arrest.

Background

Bishop Elijah Salifu Amoako, the mother of their teenage son Mouha Amoako, and Linda Bonsu Bempah, a sales assistant, were arrested following a tragic incident involving their 16-year-old son, who allegedly caused a fatal accident in East Legon on October 12, 2024.

The incident occurred when the minor driving a white Jaguar F-Space Sports without a valid license, collided with an Acura utility vehicle that subsequently caught fire, leading to the deaths of two young girls.

In December 2024, the teenage son of Salifu Amoako was sentenced to six months at the Senior Correctional Center for the manslaughter of two people in a tragic accident in East Legon.

Initially, the teen had pleaded not guilty to charges of manslaughter, negligently causing harm, dangerous driving, and driving without a license.

However, he later changed his plea to guilty, leading to his conviction.

As part of the sentence, the court ordered the teenager to report to probation officers every two weeks. He has also been directed to sign an undertaking to refrain from driving until he turns 18.

In a separate ruling, the teen’s parents were fined 500 penalty units each (equivalent to GHc 6,000) for their failure to properly supervise their son.

They were also instructed to pay for the damages caused in the accident, including a light pole valued at GHc 8,000.
