Andre Onana was dropped from Cameroon’s vital African Cup of Nations clash with The Gambia due to his ongoing feud with FA president Samuel Eto’o.

  • Onana replaced by Fabrice Ondoa
  • Cameroon beat Gambia 3-2 in wild game
  • Onana’s side qualified without him

Onana was sensationally dropped by Cameroon for their must-win final group game against The Gambia and was replaced by his cousin, Ondoa. In a wild game, Cameroon led 1-0 until the 72nd minute, when Ablie Jallow equalised. Ebrima Colley then scored in the 85th minute, but an immediate riposte came through James Gomez’s own goal, and Christopher Wooh scored the winner in injury time.

I News reports that Eto’o, the president of the Cameroonian Football Association, actually picks the Indomitable Lions team, and he remains at odds with Onana. The pair fell out when the Manchester United goalkeeper retired from international football briefly after he was sent home from the Qatar World Cup due to an argument over playing out from the back, and that has not been patched up. Eto’o subsequently omitted Onana from the team, having previously wanted to completely leave him out of the squad, before bowing to public pressure.

Onana travelled from Manchester to the AFCON for the first game of the tournament but was again left out, leaving the goalkeeper fuming. Cameroon drew their opening game with Guinea and beat Gambia without him; when he did play, against Senegal, they lost 3-1.

Cameroon have qualified for the knockout stages of the tournament thanks to their win, and Senegal’s victory over Guinea, but it remains to be seen if he will be picked for any remaining fixtures. If Eto’o does indeed select the team, one has to think he may struggle for minutes for the remainder of the competition.
